I was having a conversation with a Capricorn friend about Jean-Michel Basquiat. He was a Capricorn as well, so I started talking about his artwork and creative expression. I don’t have a birth time for him, so I’m focusing on planetary aspects (not houses) I created his natal chart on the right. The inner ring is his natal chart and the outer ring are the transits that were taking place when he died at the age of 27 on August 12, 1988.
There is no time of death, but his girlfriend at the time mentioned how Jean-Michel would sleep all day and she became worried when he didn’t come down by mid-afternoon. I chose the time above because transiting Vx (Vertex) was in Pisces right on his natal Moon. The Vertex is not a celestial body. It’s a mathematical point that often points to fated events that are beyond our control.
The one thing that stood out for me when I was looking at his chart and transits, was the Arabian part of fortune. Also known as Arabic parts or lots, the part of fortune is a mathematical calculation. The part of fortune is calculated by Ascendant+Moon-Sun/+ Sun. Like it’s name, the part of fortune points to just that: Fortunate events and gifts. In 1968, Jean-Michel was hit by a car when transiting part of fortune was in Aquarius conjunct his Venus. Venus astrologically is linked to creative/artistic expression and aesthetics. Jean-Michel’s mother bought him an anatomy book while he recovered from multiple injuries. The accident was in fact fortunate for him, because it played a major role in his creative outlook.
Jean-Michel’s moon was in creative and sensitive Pisces. The moon symbolizes the mother archetype, childhood and nurturing. Those with Pisces moon tend to have mother’s who are fragile, creative and victims in some way. Jean-Michel’s mother was institutionalized in 1970 when he was 11 years old. Earth and water are strong in his chart, giving him great artistic vision (water) and the discipline (Earth) to bring creative ideas to fruition. His natal Neptune in dark/sexual Scorpio was Square Venus, Trine Mars and Sextile Pluto. His dark images (Pluto) often had spiritual (Neptune) undertones in them. Symbols such as skulls, crowns and halos were prominent in his work.
His Sun and Moon were in the early degrees of Capricorn/Pisces. Signs in early degrees are often impulsive and an almost obsessive need to forge ahead and move onto the next thing. Cardinal energy is very strong in his chart. Cardinal signs (he has four planets in cardinal signs) are known for being initiators and at 15 he ran away from home and was eventually banned from the household. I find that Capricorns are often like little adults in a child’s body when they’re young. The father figure archetype in the home is often overbearing and the home environment in general is heavy and oppressive in some way. Jean-Michel’s work had a very grave/dark serious tone to it and this probably stemmed from his inner life. His artwork was truly an avant-garde healing tool (Chiron in Aquarius)
His natal Neptune while connected to artistic expression, spirituality and higher consciousness, is also linked to drugs and escapism. In 1997 his depression and drug use increased. While depression impacts all of us at one point in our lives, I find Capricorns in particular struggle with emotional “heaviness.” Jean-Michel’s Jupiter, Saturn and the asteroid Juno were all in Capricorn. His Pisces moon opposed his Pluto/Uranus conjunction. This points to intense, powerful moods that are often overwhelming. At the time of his death, transiting Pluto (Death/transformation) was in Scorpio conjunct his natal Neptune (drugs) Transiting Neptune was also conjunct his Sun as well as transiting North Node in Pisces on his natal Moon. The North Node points to what we struggle with in terms of ones soul-purpose; add Pisces to the mix and struggles surrounding dependence/addiction may arise.
With his Moon in Pisces (like Michael Jackson) he may have had issues with boundaries and surrounding himself with the wrong people.
He left behind 917 drawings, 25 sketchbooks, 85 prints and 171 paintings.
Right of the heels of last month’s Solar Eclipse in Scorpio we have a grounding Full Moon in Taurus upon us on November 6th (5:23PM EST)This particular eclipse is a cosmic soup that contains some pretty intense energy (both painful and healing). Self-care is really what this eclipse is about.
Let’s get the rough spots out of the way first.
Pluto forms a beautiful trine to the Moon encouraging us to vent, let go of emotional baggage and allows one to purge themselves of all the unpleasant/useless decay that’s been keeping us up at night. Pluto is a planet of transformation and with it so close to the eclipse Moon, expect a lot of stuff that you thought you were over to come right back up to the surface! As much as this sucks, it’s a part of the purging process. The quicker you release it—the better.
Saturn opposes Vulkanus making us feel weak and ineffective and this leads us to Ceres, the asteroid of early nurturing (how we were nurtured and how we nurture others) Ceres conjuncts Vesta and squares Neptune creating an inner tension that points to a yearning for nurturing, neediness and using guilt trips in order to make people take care of us—don’t do it! Food sensitivities, stomach aches, not eating, feeling undeserving of nurturing and even turning to controlled substances as a form of nurturing can often be a problem with stressful aspects between Ceres/Neptune. These are all self-care issues; be kind to yourself and please take care of you.
Taurus Energy: Stability and Values
The Taurus energy of this full moon creates an almost compulsive need for stability and earthy physical sensations (and that same Taurus energy will give us the tangible results we desire) We need love and want love desperately with this full moon and with Venus in Scorpio, the intense desire for love can be almost obsessive. Passionate and overwhelming, Venus in Scorpio wants the closeness, but trust issues may make us hesitant to fully commit to something so powerful. Yet the sweet Sun/Venus conjunction stimulates our charming side, increases our need to be around those we love and care about, and gives us that little extra push we need to take a chance when it comes to love; not just loving others, but ourselves as well.
Chiron trines the Sun, sextiles the Moon and conjuncts Neptune. This is a beautiful healing combination. Chiron isn’t just the centaur who mentored Achilles— astrologically he gives insight into wounds and gives us the tools we need to heal them properly; issues surrounding self-esteem (Sun) and emotional pains (Moon) are both healed and soothed by Neptune in Pisces. This is the perfect aspect for meditation, healing practices and spiritual work. This is especially needed for those with their Moons/Suns in either Scorpio or Taurus.
Healing Stones for Taurus:
- Angel Wing Agate
- Lapis Lazuli
I know I haven’t written here in quite some time. Last month (February 28th to be exact) while transiting Uranus in Aries entered my 6th house of heath (conjunct natal Chiron) a cyst on my ovary burst sending me to the emergency room. I’ve been experiencing fatigue for months and didn’t know what was going on. I’m a pretty energetic person (Uranus on my Ascendant and square natal Mars!) so I knew something was wrong, I just didn’t know what it was. I also found out I have multiple fibroids when I was given a sonogram in the emergency room. I have a doctors appointment next month with my OBGYN. I believe in taking control of my own healing. After all, I have the wounded healer Chiron in my 6th house of health. Transiting Chiron in Pisces is conjunct my natal Venus. Venus in medical astrology is linked to the ovaries, so I’m not in the least bit surprised I’m going through these health issues. My Venus is also in the 5th house of children so the fibroids and cyst have had an impact of my fertility.
I’m going to use this hiatus for self-care, studying healing (My Chiron in the 6th is ushering me in this direction!) and studying medical astrology. I’ve also been focusing more on Hygeia in the natal chart. She’s currently in Taurus touching my natal Venus. These are all cosmic signs that I need to focus on myself and my health. As a Pisces I tend to put people’s needs before my own, even when I’m sick. I need to tell myself over and over again that taking care of me doesn’t make me a selfish person!
When thinking of Pisces, what comes to mind? Dreamy, vague, sensitive and altruistic, the Pisces full moon will have us wearing our hearts on our sleeves. We may be feeling some emotional repression and falling back on a “woe is me,” mindset. Buckle your seat belt: It’s going to be a bumpy ride.
This full moon is a “Harvest” full moon. This basically means we will be harvesting almost everything we have sown. The Pisces/Virgo access of this full moon is about compassion/spirituality (Pisces) Vs. Being practical/organized. Pisces is the 12th sign of the zodiac. It represents the end and the beginning in some ways. You have two fish swimming in opposite directions; What is interesting is the Pisces moon makes no aspects. The Sabian symbol for this full moon is, “A Harvest Moon.” Let go of past hurts (Easier said than done) and release what no longer works for you. Saturn is conjunct Venus, giving us discipline (Saturn) through love (Venus). The Pisces Moon will allow us to flow into the earthly (Virgo) plane.
This energy is also about physical (Virgo) and Spiritual (Pisces) health. Focus on healing, maintaining a healthy diet (Virgo energy is often concerned about health). Stones to work with during this full moon:
- Aquamarine – Assists with connecting to your spirituality
- Bloodstone – For healing and personal power
- Amethyst – Opens spiritual and psychic centers
- Amber – Creates a sunny disposition
- Crystal Quartz – Helps with meditation
Cancer is associated with powerful emotional attachments, our past, family and childhood. With the Sun, Moon, Mercury and expansive Jupiter in the sign of the crab this energy will be magnetized. Cancer encourages us to be in tune with our emotional needs as well as the needs of those around us. Cancer is ruled by the Moon, so this New Moon will be particularly potent.
The Cancer sun squares Uranus in Aries creating a restless and spontaneous tension that will push us to seek more adventure, freedom and self discovery. We may find ourselves feeling a juxtaposition of emotionalism and instability. With the Moon in Cancer our moods will be fluctuating and our need to withdraw will be strong. Allow yourself to feel what you need to feel in order to heal, and then keep it moving. With the Sun (ego/self) so close to the Moon (emotional needs) we have to be careful of being one-sided about things. Yet we know what we need (moon) and how to go about getting it (sun)
Mercury rules communication, how we express ourselves and our thought process. Our way of thinking may be based more on intuition and feeling than actual logic. Mercury forms a conjunction with the new moon; communication will be especially important this time around. Mercury went retrograde on June 26th at 22 Degrees and will station direct on July 20th at 13 Degrees. Think before you speak, for our emotions are super strong during this period. Retrograde phases are also excellent for reviewing work and taking the time to review all aspects of your life as well. There is a strong creative energy with this new moon as well. We can nurture (moon/Cancer) our creativity in new ways. New Moons are all about fresh starts so use this energy to start new projects connected with lunar/cancer: such as renovating your home, decorating, planning family outings, cooking, taking care of loved ones and treating yourself.
Happy Birthday to me and Happy New Moon in Pisces to all of you! This is such a lovely inspiring New Moon with a whopping Seven Planets in Pisces; The Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Moon, Neptune and the Planetoid Chiron. What does this mean for all of us energy-wise? Emotions, spirituality, vivid dreams and escapism will be at the forefront. This is not the time to hold back emotionally. Everything we feel will over flow like a river.
Pluto makes a wide conjunction to the Vertex (Vx) and Sextiles Mercury/Chiron, giving this New Moon an almost fated feel to it. Pluto/Mercury aspects show us the power of language, the transformative energy of communication. With Chiron involved we have the ability to heal ourselves with words and creative expression. Jupiter @ 8 Degrees Gemini Sextiles Uranus in Aries, creating a sense of faith and truth. There may be sudden (Uranus) blessings (Jupiter) and a sense of spiritual freedom. The Asteroid/Goddess Ceres is @ 23 Degrees Gemini allowing us to receive nurturing through communication (Mercury) sharing ideas, and being listened to. New Moons are the perfect time to make wishes. Wishes written down during the New Moon come to fruition during the Full Moon (There will be a Full Moon in Libra on March 27th) All of this watery, healing Pisces energy (which I’m feeling strongly by the way) is the perfect time for us to reach out to others. There are strong spiritual overtones to this New Moon that cannot be ignored. Meditation, dreams and healing are all very Pisces in nature. Take advantage of this Neptunian energy to do some healing for yourself.
The Asteroid/Goddess Vesta in conjunct Jupiter. Astrologically, Vesta can symbolize devotion, meditation, magical ceremonies and rituals. With her being so close to Jupiter she points us in the direction of knowledge and expansive vision (Neptune) Vesta is also in Gemini—again, communication is a focal point for all of us at this time. Release and Heal!! With Neptune’s conjunction with Mercury, art, creative writing, music and all forms of creative expression will benefit us. Channel your inner poet or composer. We’re all feeling a bit more inspired/creative/dreamy than usual. The down side to all of this Pisces energy, if the feeling of ‘drowning’ in some way, shape or form. You may be feeling unfocused, scattered and more emotionally overwhelmed than usual. Listen to your inner voice, spiritual guides or whatever brings you comfort.
As I write this, Transiting Chiron is @ 8 Degrees Pisces approaching a conjunction to my Natal Venus in Pisces @ 14 Degrees. Venus rules both my first (Libra) and eighth house (Taurus) and old wounds have popped up forcing me to focus on healing.
Discovered in 1977, the Planetoid Chiron was named after a healing Centaur. He was an Astrologer, teacher and in Greek Mythology a teacher to Achilles. Chiron can represent deep psychological wounds and also gives us insight on how to assist in the healing process. Again, I will be using my own chart as a guide in discussing transiting Chiron and my Natal Chiron in Aries in the 6th house of service. For me Chiron in Pisces represents Neptunian forms of healing. We will see an increase of Alternative methods of healing and a deep connection to the Cosmos.
We may find ourselves becoming more intuitive (A Pisces trait) and experiencing synchronicity at higher levels. Transiting Chiron is entering my 5th house approaching my Venus which also Squares Saturn in the 8th. The fifth house has many meanings. Often associated with pleasure, fun, gambling and speculation, it also represents for me, ones inner child (This house also deals with children) Many issues from my childhood (my shyness, sensitivity and insecurity) have resurfaced forcing me to take a long look at how these issues have impacted me.
My Natal Chiron is in Aries in the 6th house. The 6th house is associated not only with service, but health as well. I have always been a bit of a hypochondriac and Chiron’s placement here has assisted me with finding a deep connection with healing alternative medicines. Providing service to others (Doing readings for clients) is extremely healing for me as well. I’m not happy unless I am assisting (6th house) people/animals in some way.
Chiron and Major Life Events:
- Transiting Asteroid Lilith (She has many meanings. In ancient mythology she was known as a demon-goddess and a devourer of children) Conjunct my Natal Chiron in the 6th when I had an ectopic pregnancy that almost killed me. This event really catapulted me into alternative medicine and healing.
- Transiting Chiron in Capricorn was conjunct my 4th house (Home) cusp when my Grandmother died and we lost our childhood home.
- Transiting Chiron in Aquarius was conjunct my Natal Jupiter in the 4th when my divorce was finalized and I found a new home (4th house)
- Transiting Chiron entered my 4th house again in 2007. The 4th house represents ones mother and my Mother died during this time. Neptune which is associated with drugs was conjunct Chiron at the time. My mother died from an overdose of prescription pills.
Though these events were all extremely painful, they all brought me closer to healing and understanding. My Astrological studies increased and I decided to use Astrology as a healing tool not just for myself but for others as well. Transiting Asteroid Pallas is currently approaching a conjunction to my Natal Chiron. Pallas is associated with knowledge and teaching. My studying has increased even more. Transiting Chiron in Pisces has given me the inspiration to use Astrology to focus on ones spirit and creativity. It has also encouraged me to explore humanistic Astrology. Astrology is an amazing tool for both growth and awareness and I’m looking forward to assisting people in their healing process. Thank you to all of those who visit my humble little blog. Your energy is truly appreciated!
The Vertex (Vx) is the intersection of the Ecliptic in the West and the Prime vertical. The Vertex is often called the angle of fate. Events usually take place that feel destined/fated in nature. The Vertex is similar to the Lunar Nodes in the sense that it is not a celestial body, but a mathematical point in ones chart. I wanted to discuss how the Vertex impacts ones chart/life by using my own chart as an example. The above chart consists of my Natal Chart in the center, and the Transits that took place on my wedding day (outer ring) I was married thirteen days after my 24th birthday. This marriage had a huge impact on me.
My Natal Vertex is @ 22 Degrees Taurus in the 8th house. The Vertex in Taurus is telling me to be independent in terms of finances/security and to earn money for myself instead of looking to other people for support. Funny thing is, this is precisely the reason why I married my now ex husband. For security (Taurus). The both of us were hopeless romantics with our Venuses conjunct in Pisces. His Natal Sun in Taurus is conjunct my Vertex almost exact! Here I was, this young Pisces girl looking for a solid, earthy and dependable man to sweep me off of my feet and who does the Universe send my Taurus Vertex? A Taurus!
On my wedding day the Asteroid Juno which symbolizes marriage, partnerships, and what we seek in a mate, was also in Taurus @ 24 Degrees transiting my 8th house conjunct my natal Vertex! My Solar Return Chart (Which is not shown here) also revealed a lot. My SR Moon was in Taurus as well as my Progressed Moon at the time. While I thought marrying this man would provide me with the stability I had always yearned for I began to see early on in the marriage that he wasn’t really the stable guy I thought he was.
Other Major Life Events and The Vertex:
- The Asteroid Ceres which represents pregnancy, birth and motherhood was in Taurus when it conjunct my Natal Vertex and I gave birth to my first child, a Son. Transiting Venus, and Transiting Vertex were all in Taurus as well!
- Transiting Mars was in Taurus conjunct my Vertex in the 8th (Death) when my grandmother died suddenly in 2005
- In 2007 Transiting Ceres in Taurus visited me once again and conjunct my Vertex when I gave birth to my second child (A girl). Transiting Vertex was in Sagittarius conjunct my natal Neptune/Ceres.
- Also, Progressed Vertex was @ 21 Degrees Gemini conjunct my Natal Moon in The 9th house which represents foreign places and long distance travel (My ex husband is from Holland)) Around the time I got married and opposite Natal Juno (Marriage) in Sagittarius.
On The Aquarius Full Moon on August 2nd, transiting Vertex will be in Libra @ 19 Degrees close to my Ascendant (Appearance) I’ve lost quite a bit of weight this month which also has to do with Transiting Saturn (Restriction) on my Ascendant as well. My Progressed Vertex is now in Cancer approaching a conjunction to my Natal MC (10th house cusp) in Cancer @ 25 degrees. There may be some major events that take place in terms of my Career (10th house) and my position in this world of ours. I’ve been dealing with quite a bit for the past three months emotionally which explains the lack of posts on this blog. Despite all of this, I’m looking forward to working with the Vertex with future and current clients. My Gemini Moon loves learning new things!
While on Twitter a few days ago a celebrity site tweeted a link about Usher’s divorce from his wife Tameka Foster. I’ve always been a fan of Usher’s so to see him looking so distraught, and to be honest, looking a hot mess, I had to take a peek at his chart to see what was going on. I’m going to focus on Usher’s current Transits and not so much on the court case itself.
What stood out the most for me is Usher’s Virgo rising with Saturn close to the Ascendant. Virgo Rising people are often meticulous perfectionists who pay close attention to detail. The Ascendant also describes ones physical appearance, and Usher has always been flawless and well groomed. Saturn is often associated with responsibility, hard work and maturity. Usher has always seemed older than he is, and started in the business at the tender age of 11 when he joined a local R&B group called The NuBeginnings. Usher was then discovered by Laface A&R representative L.A. Reid at the age of 13. Saturn Squares both the MC and Neptune in the fourth house indicating that his career created a home life that was not like the typical tween.
Pluto lord of the underworld is Conjunct Usher’s Libra Sun @ 20 Degrees. The Sun not only represents the ego and how we identify ourselves– it also represents the Father archetype. Sun/Pluto types often had powerful fathers who may have been domineering in some way. Usher’s father abandoned the family when Usher was only a year old, and he’s been impacted deeply by the absence of his father and this is definitely a painful subject for him. Sun/Pluto types often have an obsession with the father or fatherhood in general, and I’m sure the custody battle he is going through concerning his children is triggering feelings deeply buried (Pluto) within him concerning his own father. Transiting Saturn is forming a conjunction to Usher’s Sun and Squaring his natal Moon in Pisces in the 7th as well as his South Node in Pisces. Usher is dealing with some serious Karmic issues in terms of his relationships with women. Usher’s Natal Venus in intense/Sexual Scorpio, is a part of a Scorpio stellium that includes Mars, Uranus and Mercury. This combined with his Pisces moon makes Usher an extremely watery sensitive type who is highly intuitive in nature. Having a partner is of great importance to him, yet his Uranus/Mars conjunction can make him impulsive, causing him leap with out looking.
Transiting Pluto has entered his fourth house and will be slowly approaching his Ceres and Juno in the 5th house. Ceres in the Goddess of agriculture and the harvest. She is especially known for the loss of her child Persephone who was kidnapped by Pluto and dragged into the underworld. Astrologically Ceres can represent children, and with Pluto making it’s way to Usher’s 5th house (The 5th house represents Children!) He is most definitely afraid of his children being “kidnapped” symbolically by Tameka (Pluto) and this has to be one of the most difficult times in his life. Transiting Neptune in Pisces is entering his 7th house and he is most definitely feeling confused, a bit detached from reality and not quite sure who he can trust. Neptune also represents substances of all kinds (Alcohol, Drugs..) and escapism. Tameka has accused Usher of drug abuse in this custody battle, and with his Moon already in Neptune ruled Pisces, I would not be surprised if this was the case.
This is probably one of the most difficult times in Usher’s life. He is dealing with heavy transits from outer Planets: Pluto, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. These Planets are heavy hitters in the Astro-Game and when the dust settles Usher will have been taught a valuable lesson about relationships. His need for a partner is strong and Karmic in nature. My advice to him would be to focus on his own healing and take a break from the dating scene. For a Libra (With a Pisces Moon in the 7th!) being single will not be easy. From what I’ve read he is already in another relationship! I’m definitely going to keep my eye on his Astrologically.
