I haven’t written a post here in God knows how long. I just haven’t felt motivated or inspired. It took a little celebrity gossip to get my astro-juices flowing.
I was reading some news today and decided to take a look at Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s synastry chart. Things are getting kind of intense between these two. I quickly jotted down some notes in my astro-journal about these two. Nothing too detailed. Just some observations.
I have new software (yay!) and created a tri-wheel. Brad’s chart is the center wheel, Angelina the second wheel, and the outer wheel is their current transits.
Despite Brad’s sunny Sagittarius nature (Sagittarius Sun/Rising) he has a lot of Capricorn planets (Moon, Mercury, Mars and Venus) I know how cold and calculating Capricorn can be (His Aquarius ex, Jennifer Aniston, mentioned him having a missing “Sensitivity chip’) He’s definitely using his P.R. team during this child custody debacle.
Speaking of kids, I think this is going to get uglier. Transiting Pluto is on his natal Moon and Pluto/Moon transits, especially the stressful ones, unleash all kinds of emotional triggers and power plays. He’s in survival mode at the moment. Transiting Pluto is also on his Venus which rules his 5th house of children. Transiting Uranus in Taurus is slowly approaching his 5th house and this can indicate a broken relationship with ones children or at least a sporadic one. This entire situation is a bit unpredictable.
Transiting Ceres at 22 Degrees is approaching a conjunction to his Midheaven at 26 Degrees Virgo. We all know the Ceres/Persephone myth concerning a parent (Ceres) losing her child (Persephone) for Brad, his parental issues are being played out before the public (Midheaven) Transiting Ceres is also opposing his 4th house cusp (home/family) his Chiron (wounds) and transiting Neptune. There’s a lot going on that’s not being revealed (Neptune)
Angelina is being hit hard by transiting Chiron in Aries approaching her natal Moon in Aries. Her natal Ceres (motherhood) in Taurus will be hit with a transit from Uranus in Taurus. This is definitely upsetting her family set-up. She has the asteroid “Child” in Cancer at 3 degrees opposing transiting Saturn in Capricorn. This can be a restrictive (Saturn) situation involving her kids. This could also be the judge (Saturn is associated with authority and discipline) requiring her to allow Brad to see the kids, and all of these ground rules concerning support, etc. I know this is difficult for a free-spirit like her who is known for her wanderlust.
Brad’s “Child” is at 0 Degrees Sagittarius in his 12th house. I think once transiting Jupiter enters Sagittarius next year there’s going to be a shift in HIS favor. His “Golden Boy” image is really going to get played up once Jupiter touches his ascendant. Angelina on the other hand has transiting Pluto and Lilith opposing her ascendant and transiting Chiron approaching a conjunction to her Midheaven. Her we have the “Bitch” (Lilith) image and that’s how the public may paint her. Combine this with Chiron on the Midheaven and her public image may take a blow.
Take note of Angelina’s Neptune conjunct Brad’s ascendant. Did she project her own fantasies onto Brad? I always got the feeling she did. Their union always made me think of the weird goth girl that managed to snag the captain of the football team. I don’t think either one of them saw the other clearly to be honest with you. His interest in her always felt self-serving. I’m sure he loves her, she’s the mother of his children after all, but their was always this waiting-for-the-other-shoe-to-drop energy surrounding their union.
Brad met her during a major Pluto transit to his natal Sun. This is a profound transit, and his meeting her was no accident. People come into our lives for good or bad I suppose.
This is one big mess.
Lilith can often unleash obsession, lust and issues surrounding power. Black Moon Lilith is the feminine archetype of dark primal energy. She’s the seductress and the mystical side of sexuality.
In early Sumerian mythology Lilith was Adam’s first wife, and due to her refusal to submit to him (and patriarchy) she became the archetypal, “Bitch Goddess.”: A vicious vamp; both whore and seductress, a femme fatal who was deadly and banished into the wilderness. Prince’s song, “Irresistible Bitch,” (and to some degree, “Little Red Corvette”) speak of Lilith’s power, especially over men. We see Lilith’s stamp on his track, “Shockadelica,” as well (Where Lilith takes form as a witch), the ultimate Lilith anthem, “Pussy Control,” and “Darling Nikki,” where Lilith unleashes her sexual prowess (and devices) on Prince after luring him to her castle. Once again, Lilith’s mark can be heard on Vanity 6’s, “Nasty Girl,” where Vanity boldly lets the world know of her sexual prowess and needs.
Prince often takes on the role of sexual submissive in many of his songs and he is usually at the mercy of his personal Lilith. Prince’s Lilith is in fiery Aries in the creative 5th house (a house also associated with love affairs) at 12 degrees trine Uranus in Leo. Prince’s musical message (prior to his religious conversion) was always of female sexual power, and sex (Lilith) as a catalyst to freedom and liberation (Uranus) Sex also served as a conduit to the spirit and the spirit world. This duality was put on display during his “Lovesexy” tour (1988) where the first half of the show was centered around surrendering to the pleasures of sex (Lilith) and the second half focused on spiritual awakening and transcendence (Neptune)
Lilith in the 5th house gives insight into Prince’s creative process and the fact that
women are often centered in his music and serve as creative muses. His sexual assertiveness got him in hot water with Tipper Gore after she heard Prince use the word, “Masturbation” in his song “Darling Nikki’. Because of this the “Parental Advisory” sticker was born. The PMRC (Parents Music Resource Center) had a list called the, “Filthy Fifteen,” and “Darling Nikki” was voted number one!
Prince was very much an outsider even though he was popular. Like Lilith he was “exiled” due to his sexual lyrical content, persona, and refusal to submit to record labels and societies puritanical views on sex. His Lilith/Uranus aspect made him the ultimate sexual trouble-maker with shocking (Uranus) results. It is Uranus’ job to upset the apple cart and place one on the path to emancipation and It is Lilith’s job to enforce autonomy and personal power, and this is often done through sex. For Prince sex was fun and creative (5th) and allowed him to merge feminine (Lilith) and masculine (his Mars in Aries) energies, and as I said above, the Goddess, often takes a leading (Mars) role in his more sexual songs.
Of course his religious awakening had him omitting the curse words from the majority of his songs and he even refused to perform his more sexual content during live shows when he became a Jehovah’s Witness. Yet Lilith’s energy is very much front and center on songs such as, “Breakfast can wait” (2014) though her influence is more subtle.
Brad Pitt is currently experiencing two major transits: transiting Saturn on his Sun, and transiting Pluto on his natal Moon. This is the end of a cycle for Brad and I said that this divorce would do more of a number on him than on Angelina. Brad has both Neptune and the asteroid Karma in the 12th house (a house associated with self-undoing) and him admitting to using controlled substances doesn’t surprise me with Neptune in the 12th. Here his dependencies (Neptune) are hidden (12th) and he more than likely hid them from himself as well.
What’s interesting about Brad’s chart is his un-aspected Sun in the 1st house opposite his 7th house. His sense of self (Sun/1st) is tied into his partners (7th) He tends to rely on his significant other to give him insight into his identity. He tends to morph into his partners as well.
During his separation from Jennifer Aniston, transiting Pluto was conjunct his natal Sun in 2005. This is probably one of thee most powerful transits an individual can experience. Right before the publics eyes we saw Brad transform (Pluto) especially in terms of his appearance (1st house) he died his hair black, got the first in a series of tattoos, and began to take part in Angelina’s charitable endeavors.
Pluto is the planet that creates, destroys, and then re-creates. The Brad Pitt we had once known (or thought we knew) had completely re-invented himself.
Fast forward ten years later; Brad is now experiencing another major Pluto transit. This time it’s to his natal Moon. His home life (and marriage) have been completely broken down by Pluto’s powerful rays. Pluto functions like a cosmic demolition man. Whatever is not stable in your life will come crashing down around you. This is part of the regeneration process. In order for something new to be built old structures must be destroyed.
Our Natal Moon gives us insight into how we are emotionally fed, the mother archetype (Anima) and how we nurture ourselves and others. The Moon is the divine feminine, and a woman (Angelina) who played a significant role during his first Pluto transit, has now been removed from the picture (Pluto/Moon)
For further insight I added a few asteroids to his chart to see what’s going on: the asteroid, “Melpomene,” named after the Greek muse of tragedy, is transiting his marriage house. Her symbol is the, “Tragic Mask,” and Brad was definitely wearing his in this GQ interview.
Transiting Karma and Psyche (seat of the soul) are conjunct in his career/public image house opposite natal Chiron in the 3rd house of communication. His GQ interview was actually just what the Shaman (Chiron) ordered. He finally went into therapy (Psyche/Chiron) and has quite a few wounds tied to his home environment (4th) and spoke of struggling to express his feelings/emotions. There is an internal struggle between his somewhat traditional home life/roots (Moon in Capricorn) and his own progressive idealism (Sun in Sagittarius) His struggles to purge emotionally doesn’t surprise me with that Capricorn Moon of his. Being vulnerable can be difficult for Capricorn energy, and frightening. Sagittarius men in particular seem to be going through it! Side note: the dark goddess, Lilith, is approaching a conjunction to his ascendant. He’s having his ass served to him big time. He’ll learn. He has no choice but to.
Anyone who knows me knows what a massive Prince fan I am. I’ve been meaning to write something about his chart but felt too overwhelmed shortly after his passing. It’s hard to believe it’s been almost a year since he left us. This post was inspired by a series of dreams I had about him. I intuitively pulled a few tarot cards as well…
I – 8 of Pentacles Reversed
The very first card (8 of Pentacles) is usually a warning about unethical business associates and shady deals in general, but mainly about over-extending one’s self. In the reverse position this card is associated with workaholic tendencies and neglecting one’s health. Saturn’s Rx phase during the time of his death could have been warning him to slow down. There have been numerous conspiracy theories surrounding Prince’s death and with Neptune tightly conjunct the Midheaven of his death chart, his passing is shrouded in mystery (Neptune) but I don’t want to talk about conspiracy theories. I’d much rather discuss how fascinating his chart is. It’s filled with so much creativity, beauty and sensitivity.
Prince was highly intuitive (Moon in Pisces at 1 degree 59 minutes trine his Neptune/Psyche conjunction in Scorpio in the 12th house). This gift of insight and premonition was more than likely inherited from his female ancestors (Moon in the 4th) someone this “plugged in” would know if his time were coming to an end. His Gemini Sun (life force) sits in the 8th house (death) conjunct the Vertex (fated events). Transiting Saturn Rx in Sagittarius was approaching a return to its natal position at the time of his death. The Rx aspect could indicate something burdensome returning (Sagittarius rules the hips/legs) His health/sickness house ruler, Mars, powerfully placed in its ruling sign, Aries, makes a stressful aspect to Saturn natally so his pending Saturn return, in addition to transiting Uranus in his health house, put Prince under a lot of stress physically. Uranus transits, at least health-wise, are indicative of burn out and anxiety. His body was literally screaming for a break.
Natal Saturn in Sagittarius at 22 degrees 52 minutes was Rx and in his 2nd house
opposite his Sun (ego/life force) in his natal chart as well and this is the classic workaholic aspect. The 2nd house is tied into self-worth what we value and finances. Prince more than likely felt like he had something to prove throughout his entire life and this is linked to his father (Saturn). In mythology Saturn/Kronos had fears his children would overthrow him and his solution was to eat/consume them. The opposition aspect is often projection, and Prince’s father could have very well projected a lot of his fears/criticism and expectations onto Prince. Depression, perfectionism (which can also trigger depression) and heavy responsibilities (In Prince’s case there is a “debt” to the father) are also associated with Saturn astrologically. For some parents parenthood is often ego-driven. Children become funnels and parents often live vicariously through them.
Saturn’s pending return to its natal placement may have triggered issues pertaining to his self-worth (2nd house) and proving himself, yet again. As someone who was strongly focused on aesthetics/Beauty (Venus in Taurus) I wonder how he felt about aging and getting older. With transiting Saturn opposing his career house ruler (Sun) there may have also been feelings of frustration pertaining to his career. Saturn can create inertia. This must have been especially frustrating for someone like Prince who was quite prolific and full of energy. The slowing down of his physical body must have been pure hell for him.
Saturn, with its penchant for authority, would cause Prince to view men (Sun) as competition in general. He preferred the company of women (Moon/Neptune trine) and felt more comfortable with them. His Mars exalted in Aries makes him competitive by nature. For Prince there was only room for one rooster in the hen-house! He merged the softness of his Pisces Moon with the raw sexuality of his Mars in Aries perfectly. The 8 of Pentacles is a master at his craft. In the image we see a man hammering away at his creations/pentacles. These pentacles (also called, “Coins,” and “Disk’s”) for me symbolize Prince’s music/albums and his creative process. He was extremely prolific and has the astrological chart of someone who has had to work very hard for most of his life and didn’t expect anyone to help him; it would also make it difficult for Prince to ask for help if he needed it.
At the time of his passing transiting Saturn at 14 degrees was also tightly conjunct his financial house cusp and he may have been forced to scale back financially and live with less. Of course the term, “Less,” often has a different meaning for the rich and famous.
But let’s get back to the messages contained in the tarot cards.
II – Judgement – Reversed
The second card (Judgement Reversed) speaks of stasis and isolation and this was probably one of the worse things Prince could have done—cutting himself off from people. Judgement in the reverse position speaks of false spiritual teachings and this could be his Jehovah Witness faith. Prince has always interwoven spiritual/religious/mystical themes into his music (His Pisces Moon is quite spiritually ambitious) and that was never an issue for me. While I am not religious (I was not raised with organized religion) I do believe in a higher spiritual power. Prince’s uninhibited (Venus/Uranus square in his chart) merging of god/sex was one of the key themes that I loved about him and at first found his gravitation to the JW faith quite odd. Eastern/esoteric philosophies with its focus on reincarnation, (another theme Prince explored numerous times in his music) and sex as a tantric expression (“Lovesexy”) seemed more in line with who he was. I’m a firm believer that the JW faith caused him some internal conflict and disconnected him from the essence of who he was and this led to crisis (transiting Pluto square his natal Sun) There could have been fears of judgement as well.
This reminds me of another reading I did for Prince in 2013/2014. I began to sense a spiritual shift in Prince and pulled The Hierophant card in the reversed position. The Hierophant is often depicted as a priest/religious figure and is associated with tradition. With this card in the reversed position Prince may have been moving away from traditional religious practices. With his Mercury in its ruling sign Gemini, at 4 degrees 6 minutes conjunct the asteroids Hypnos/Vesta (dedication to service and obsessive focus) and square Pluto, Prince had a deep probing mind that was restless and constantly searching for knowledge. A stimulating environment was a must for a man like him. He also got bored quickly (Uranus in the 9th) and like a nomad, was always searching for something else. When I saw that he named his group, “Third Eye Girl,” I was intrigued. It was around this time that I began to realize that Prince was more than likely distancing himself from traditional (Hierophant) religious doctrine and exploring more esoteric themes, while maintaining his deeply rooted Christian beliefs.
Prince has the chart of a, to quote Bob Marley, “Natural Mystic” (Moon in Pisces) and healer of the collective (Chiron in Aquarius). He is naturally in tune with Christ consciousness, but his Moon/Neptune aspect can create a sort of religious/spiritual naiveté and makes him an emotional/psychic sponge that is susceptible to deception (Neptune 2 degrees 20 minutes in Scorpio in the 12th house of hidden agendas).
There have been numerous amusing statements about how bewitching Prince is (his eyes especially) and even YouTube videos accusing Prince of everything from sex magic to witchcraft! The fixed star Enif, located in the nose of the constellation, Pegasus, is conjunct Prince’s Moon and is associated with intuition, as well as the Part of Spirit and the fixed star, Sadalmelik, a star associated with occult knowledge. I think his Pluto tightly conjunct the Midheaven/10th elicits this kind of powerful (Pluto) reaction from the public (10th)
III – Queen of Pentacles – A nurturing woman/Archetypal Mother
Was Prince looking for a woman who exhibited some of the same personality traits as the Queen of Pentacles? It’s hard to say. Women have always played a major role in Prince’s life: creatively, romantically, and spiritually. The “dark” Goddess, Black Moon Lilith in Aries, sits in his creative 5th house
Prince’s Ceres (mother to Persephone) in Leo sits in the 9th house of higher education conjunct Uranus. (his mother earned her masters degree and became a social worker) His mother may have been more concerned with her own goals/development and there is an erratic (Uranus) element to his nurturing (Ceres). Despite this Ceres/Uranus speaks of a mother that is vibrant and unconventional. Prince said in early interviews that he got his wild side from his mother.
This may have caused young Prince to be more self-reliant than the average child his age. His Moon forms an out-of-sign conjunction to Chiron, the wounded healer. Moon/Chiron aspects, in particular the stressful aspects, often point to emotional and maternal wounds linked to a lack of nurturing. Prince left his childhood home as a young man and bounced around quite a bit.Interestingly enough, in mythology, Chiron was abandoned by his mother (the nymph, Philyra). While Chiron can be associated with psychic wounds he is also a symbol of the emergence of hidden gifts. In Prince’s case Chiron’s opposition to Pluto/Midheaven/Regulus gave him the unwavering drive to succeed. With Chiron’s trine to Jupiter (11th) and his Amor in Gemini (7th) healing/nurturing was more than likely obtained through connections to friends, like-minded individuals (11th), and lovers (7th); not necessarily blood relatives.
His ties to women (and his female ancestors) are extremely compelling with the Moon in the 4th house, and his cultural roots are strong as well (his emotional desire for roots is pronounced as well) the 4th house is ones physical home (our ancestors) and childhood. This explains him never abandoning Minneapolis and choosing to stay close to home. But there are a lot of emotional wounds as well (Chiron conjunct Moon) His Moon/Pluto aspect triggered feelings towards his mother that were probably extremely complex, consuming, and overwhelming. Luckily for his mother, Prince was extremely compassionate and forgiving when it came to her (Moon trine Neptune) and he adored her and she adored him (his mother was a Scorpio) It’s weird, looking at his chart I can see she’s deeply imbedded in his subconscious, yet it’s like she’s a myth (Neptune) I wonder what she was going through while pregnant with Prince. Babies absorb this energy (it’s called the Pre-Natal Moon) and the 12th house is pretty much the holding cell for this kind of energy as well as karmic memories.
III/I – Women (Moon) as catalysts for change
His Eros, (symbol of passion and desire) is in Pisces as well, at 19 degrees, giving credence to the numerous stories about Prince doing nothing more than bathing women, or simply brushing their hair. Eros is much more than erotic and sexual fixation: it serves as a funnel of sorts (creativity is passion as well) and in the natal chart it gives clues into where our passions thrive. His Eros in mystical Pisces may very much have been content with just appreciating women, and being in their presence more than likely provided all of the passion he needed. The Mystic (Pisces) and the erotic (Eros) are fused, and of course we see these two energies in almost everything he did, especially in his lyrics and imagery.
His Moon (women/emotional drive), trines Neptune and sextiles his Venus at 7 degrees 50 minutes in its ruling sign, Taurus (ruler of his 7th house) in his 6th house. He was certainly a man who loved beauty (Venus) and linked it to the divine (Neptune) and was a hopeless romantic, yet Venus/Neptune aspects can also produce unrealistic expectations and a lack of boundaries, especially when it came to love. This can lead to disappointment and unwillingness to commit. Often the idea of love is more appealing than the actual relationship itself. He needed someone he could merge with (he could also tap into women empathically) and we see this need projected onto his numerous female protégées. Prince’s lovers and muses are more than musical projects, they were extensions of himself and his sensitive Moon more than likely loved to save women (his Venus sits in the house of service). No one loves a victim, or a perceived victim, like Pisces. Venus in his service house is more than likely the reason he would often get involved with women her worked with. The 6th house, like the 10th, is also a house associated with career.
While his Moon in Pisces is quite caring and sensitive, it squares his Pluto-Midheaven conjunction and the fixed star, Regulus, at the critical 29th degree. Prince had the power (Pluto) and ability to extract your secrets while simultaneously maintaining his. Often stressful Moon/Pluto aspects can unleash manipulation and power plays, especially if one feels threatened or feels as though their own power is being taken from them. So while Prince offered assistance to women, there is an underlying manipulative aspect to his giving! Most of this is due to fears of relinquishing personal power and being abandoned (Moon conjunct Chiron) Like his ascendant ruler, Pluto/Hades, Prince offers his Persephone a very tempting pomegranate, one that is virtually impossible to resist.
The key issue for Prince in terms of his love life is linked to a powerful T-square that consists of Neptune, Venus and Uranus at the apex. Venus opposes Neptune, squares Uranus, and trines Pluto! So here we have someone who becomes enamored quite quickly (Venus/Neptune) becomes almost obsessive in his affections (Venus/Pluto) only to lose interest (Venus/Uranus) when someone more interesting comes along. Newness is something that Prince loved and this is classic Uranus behavior.
His Moon/Pluto square also gives him an emotional upper hand in his relationships. He was the kind of man who had a powerful (Pluto) influence on others, especially women (Moon). Prince’s drives and desires were often hidden at first glance, especially when it came to love and romantic partners. His relationship house is governed by sensual Taurus and its ruler, Venus, also rules the ever so secretive 12th house. He was not one to kiss and tell and whatever he shared with the woman he was with stayed hidden from others. To say he was private is truly an understatement. It’s actually quite refreshing; especially in this age of social media where a tremendous amount of over sharing takes place.
IV – Death/Power as a vehicle to transformation (8th House Sun)
His Gemini Sun at 16 degrees 41 minutes is the consummate symbol of duplicity and the integration of oppositions. It’s placement in the sexually charged 8th house, which is also associated with death, regeneration and transformation. We see these themes explored in his “7” video where Prince lures different versions of himself into an elevator/capsule and “kills” them off. This is a theme (death) that we see repeatedly, especially with his name change to an unpronounceable symbol and his mantra at the time, “Prince is dead.” During this particular period transiting Pluto (God of the underworld) was on Prince’s Scorpio ascendant ushering in a profound sense of transformation and re-birth. Pluto creates, destroys and then re-creates. This is certainly what Prince was experiencing, and anyone who has felt the forces of a transit from Pluto to the sensitive points in their natal chart (1st, 4th, 7th and 10th houses) know all too well the almost cataclysmic energy that permeates.
His Pluto on the Midheaven would have Prince at odds with authority and often this was played out publicly (his battle with Warner Bros. in the 90’s) The 10th house is more than one’s vocation; it symbolizes the world at large and how we navigate within it. While he was deeply private (Scorpio rising) Leo rules his career house, conjunct the royal star Regulus no less! Here we have a private figure (Scorpio) with a very public (Leo) profession. For Leo the world is a stage and Prince controlled (Pluto) how his image/public life was portrayed, and rightfully so.
At the time of his death transiting Jupiter was square his natal Sun in his house of death (8th house) his transition was smooth and Jupiter/Sun is very much a release. He’s resting easy now. The New Moon in Scorpio was in his 12th house. Death is merely a beginning.
Travel safely, Prince.
*Update: I now have Vanity’s birth time. This post will be revised in the future.
Very rarely do celebrity couples intrigue me, or should I say the current crop of famous duos that grace the covers of glossy magazines and social media, yet Prince and Vanity’s coupling was always a fascinating one and even more so since they died within 2 months of each other. The both of them were approaching their second Saturn returns when they transitioned.
In terms of mythology they remind me of Jupiter (Zeus) and his consort/wife/sister Juno (Hera). As we know, Zeus was a notorious shapeshifter with a roving eye. Jupiter and Juno’s union played out like a literal Greek soap opera steeped in power struggles and betrayal. Juno was known for seeking revenge on Jupiter’s lovers, unleashing her fury and wrath; yet Vanity and Prince’s union played out in different ways. The myth also speaks of Juno/Hera bathing in the streams of Argos, cleansing herself of Jupiter/Zeus’ influence and regaining her virginity. This aligns with Denise eventually leaving Prince, finding Christ, and abandoning the persona of Vanity for good.
The definition on Juno in Astrology
Juno is often labeled the asteroid of marriage even though her meaning goes beyond that. While she can certainly point to what we want in a marriage partner and how we commit to those in our intimate lives, she also can trigger jealousy and give us insight into the ultimate relationship: our relationship with ourselves.
The beauty of astrology is in how mythological archetypes often play out literally in the natal chart. This is very much the case when I looked at the charts of these two. While
there is no birth time available for Vanity (Born Denise Katrina Matthews, January 4th 1959, Niagara Falls, ON) there is a time of birth for Prince (Born Prince Rogers Nelson, June 7th 1958 at 6:17PM, Minneapolis, MN)
While Prince had a plethora of muses, girlfriends (and two ex-wives under his belt) Vanity was the first “official” Prince girl in terms of visibility and public notoriety. I suppose she is the construct or blueprint (Prince’s Aphrodite, goddess of beauty, in Cancer, opposes her natal Venus in Capricorn, making her the ideal canvas for him to project his creative/sensual fantasies onto, hence the name, “Vanity.”) that spawned those who came after her.
Juno in Synastry
Prince followed me, he took off his jacket and asked me to take off mine. I asked, “Why?” He said, “So I can try yours on and you can try on mine.” So we tried on each other’s clothes and realized that we fit each other’s clothes. I thought that was wonderful. – Vanity, JET magazine, May 1986
One of the first aspects that jumped out is Prince’s Jupiter in Libra at 21’59 degrees conjunct Vanity’s Juno in Libra at 21’32 degrees. Here we have the myth played out strongly in the Synastry chart! Vanity’s Juno falls in Prince’s 11th house, the house of hopes, friends, ambition and goals. Vanity certainly benefited from her association with Prince at that time and the 11th house functions as a benefactor of sorts. Juno in Libra often attracts a partner that is quite beautiful and artistically inclined and Prince was both. There’s a strong sense of attachment, support and loyalty between Prince and Vanity’s Juno/Jupiter aspect and it’s obvious that Vanity wanted a stronger commitment. Unfortunately, Prince’s Jupiter is Rx, and the Venusian influence has him on the look out for beauty at all times, even outside of “commitment.” Libra is also quite diplomatic and even though the two parted ways ages ago there wasn’t much mud slinging (Vanity often spoke fondly of him) Peace and balance are strong virtues for Libra and during that time period Vanity confessed to writing a manuscript for a tell-all book yet changed her mind. This is the loyalty aspect that I often see from Juno in synastry charts.
The Dark Goddess: Lilith
Black Moon Lilith is a major player when it comes to these two. In synastry she can unleash obsession, lust and issues surrounding power. Black Moon Lilith is the feminine archetype of dark primal energy. She’s the seductress and the mystical side of sexuality. These themes are quite strong in the charts of both Prince and Vanity individually and in synastry.
In part II I’ll explore Lilith in depth and how their union triggered both the good and bad in each other.
Born Robert Nesta Marley on February 6th, 1945, Bob has quite a bit of air in his chart. His Sagittarius ascendant and Juno in Gemini also gives some insight into his relationships with women. He definitely liked variety when it came to the women in his world and his Juno (marriage/commitment) played a huge role in that aspect of his life.
Bob, believe it or not, has a very psychic/prophetic chart. All three of his occult/mystical houses (12th, 4th and 8th) are illuminated. His Scorpio Moon in the 12th house points to an individual with powerful intuitive energy and the ability to tap into the emotions of those around him. The Moon positioned in the 12th house may have made Bob hide his deepest and most personal feelings emotions from those around him. While is foward-thinking Aquarius Sun exhibited a man with progressive ideas and a certain amount of open charm, his emotional world was deeply guarded and under lock and key. Scorpio Moon craves deep/intense interaction with others, but issues surrounding trust often prevents them from doing so.
It’s Bob’s Sagittarius rising at 15 degrees that gave him the power of prophetic insight. Sagittarius energy has strong philosophical views, insight into current trends and long-range vision. His ascendant ruler (Jupiter) makes a wide conjunction to his Virgo Midheaven. The Midheaven (10th house cusp) isn’t just about ones career–it points to the world at large and how the masses view us. Bob’s philosophical (Jupiter) and spiritual views (Neptune in the 10th) were a huge part of his mental outlook and creativity. His Aquarius Sun conjunct the 3rd house cusp was determined to spread his views on pan-africanism (his Vertex/fate sits in the 9th house of philosophical views and international travel) to the world at large (His Sun rules the 9th house cusp)
As for his love life, his Moon/Juno quincux, Pluto trine Venus, and Mars in Capricorn trine Jupiter (as well as that roving Sagittarius rising of his) gave me some major clues. Bob Married Rita on February 10th 1966 when the transiting Sun was in his second house. The 2nd house is the house of finances (Rita worked and toured with her husband) and despite Bob’s infidelity, the two maintained a deep spiritual bond. Bob’s Vertex, which deals with destiny and fate is conjunct Rita’s Leo Sun. In synastry, this is a powerful soul-mate indication and with his fiery Venus in sexy Aries (4th house) trine Pluto (8th house) in Leo no less, I’m sure this man was hard to resist! He definitely knew how to tap into a woman’s psyche: The 8th house is also the house of sex/transformation
Bob’s Pluto is also conjunct Rita’s Sun. This points to a powerful–almost hypnotic–connection between two individuals. The Pluto person (in this case, bob) usually has a powerful hold over the Sun individual and with his Juno in Gemini in the 7th house, Bob viewed the women in his life as friends/siblings. Gemini is known for duality and spinning plates so to speak, so it doesn’t surprise me that he juggled multiple women. What’s interesting is that Rita often referred to bob as her, “Brother,” and this is exactly how Juno in Gemini often presents itself.
It’s also no secret that Bob has quite a few kids! His official website lists eleven children (he had three with Rita) his 5th house (house of children) ruler is trine Jupiter. This is a very, “The more the merrier” kind of aspect. Jupiter tends to expand whatever it touches, and with this planet trining his 5th house ruler, it doesn’t surprise me that he had a large family.
His spiritual beliefs are tied into his Neptune/Pallas conjunction in the 10th house. Both of these planets are in Libra trine Uranus in Gemini in the 6th house of health. His religious/spiritual beliefs also played a role in his healing process during his battle with cancer. Chiron, the wounded/healer is conjunct Neptune, trine Uranus and opposes his health house ruler (Venus). Bob refused to have his toe amputated during his cancer struggle, because of his Rastafarian beliefs, and chose alternative healing instead.
Uranus is associated with unconventionality and almost futuristic practices. His Uranus in his health house gives insight into his views on health and how he chose to heal himself on his own terms (Bob sought “controversial” treatments in Bavaria) Ironically, Chiron had been wounded/poisoned with an arrow that belonged to Heracles; due to his own immortality, Chiron lived with the wound until he chose to give up his life in exchange for the life of Prometheus. This really touched me as I looked at Bob’s house of health and his Chiron. Bob chose to leave this earth on his own terms and that takes a tremendous amount of bravery and courage, and while Chiron was honored with a place in the sky (the constellation, Centaurus) Bob has left behind a powerful legacy of his own. Travel safely, Bob!
When looking at Angela Davis’ chart, there is no denying the brilliance, bravery and non-traditional energies she embodies. She pretty much emerged from the womb ready to take on the world!
Early nurturing influences
Born Angela Yvonne Davis on January 26th 1944, in Birmingham, Alabama (at 12:30 PM) her most elevated planet is her Sun in Aquarius right on the Midheaven. Aquarius, more than any sign in the Zodiac, is always more than willing to fight for the collective consciousness and embrace radical concepts. Her Sun conjuncts the South Node in Aquarius and trines Neptune in Libra in the 6th house of service; It has been her life’s purpose to serve humanity and possibly in a past life (South Node) as well. This spirit of activism was influenced heavily by her mother. Angela’s Moon, associated with the mother and nurturing, is in Aquarius as well and trines Ceres (mother to Persephone, nurturing, parenting) in thought provoking and intellectual Gemini in the 3rd house of communication. Angela’s mother was a leading organizer of The Southern Negro Youth Congress whose influences were heavily colored by the communist party. Her Moon/Ceres aspect in air is a huge indicator of intellectual (Gemini) and progressive (Aquarius) nurturing (Moon/Ceres)
Ceres’ gift to the world was through nourishment/food/harvest. Her placement in Gemini intensifies the need for knowledge and sharing it with others through support and education (she’s the former director of the feminist studies department at the University of California)
Her Pluto in the 4th house gives clues into the intense/dark racial climate Angela dealt with in her living environment. The 1963 church bombings took place in Alabama and this had a huge impact on Angela. While painful, the experiences were life altering and transformational on a deep psychological level. Pluto’s opposition to her Sun is indicative of power struggles from the powers that be and her refusal to allow those in control to rule over her in anyway.
Her Aquarius Sun is at the apex of a lovely and inspiring kite formation in air, which consists of Uranus in Gemini, Neptune in Libra, and Pluto in Leo anchoring the aspect. Here we have the freedom fighter with an idealist touch (nearly all of Angela’s planets and goddess asteroids are in air signs) with her Sun conjunct the Midheaven (the collective and how the world at large viewed her and continues to view her) trine Neptune she has become somewhat of a mythological figure and savior (Neptune) to the masses, even if she doesn’t view herself that way.
Feminism and Women’s Issues
Juno in Aquarius is the radical bride. She commits to no one, yet everyone. Juno is also associated with womanhood, marriage, and childbirth. Angela is a staunch supporter of reproductive rights and the rights of women. Her passion is further ignited by Vesta in Gemini in conjunct Uranus and trine her South Node/Sun conjunction. Her we have a deep commitment to serving her inner intellectual/goddess and with its placement in the 1st house it shows a deep desire for individualism and emancipation while sharing these same gifts with the people/women.
Juno is conjunct her Moon in Aquarius. Her activism certainly provides emotional comfort.
Angela’s strong desire to reform and transform extends to the industrial prison complex. The 12th house rules institutions, prison being one of them. Her 12th house ruler (Mars) is conjunct Uranus! Uranus is the archetypal symbol of freedom and transcending traditional restraints that hinder growth. Pallas (Athena) warrior-goddess of wisdom and aid to those in battle, sits in the 12th house in Aries revealing her to be a powerful ally to a group that is often hidden/ignored (12th) This of course included her ties to the Black Panthers and the Communist Party.
Philosophy and Social Consciousness
Mercury in disciplined Capricorn sits in the 9th house of higher-education, philosophy, and foreign travel. While studying French, Angela had a deep interest in philosophy and philosophical thought. Mercury/Capricorn gives one a mature and sober thought process. Even as a child her thinking was advanced. She was awarded a scholarship to Brandies University. The ruler of her 9th house (Saturn) is in Gemini in the 3rd house of writing and communication; Saturn conjuncts Ceres and trines her Moon. To say learning and philosophical thought feeds her emotionally is an understatement. Another curious find is her connection to German-American philosopher, Herbert Marcuse. Angela met him during a rally and he became a mentor to her. Herbert’s Mercury forms a wide conjunction to her Jupiter and his Jupiter conjuncts her Neptune and trine’s her Sun. This is a pleasant and supportive meeting of the minds that encourages expansive thinking. She credited him for helping her to merge her academic and revolutionary ideologies.
